Thanks Jack...
I would LOVE to be on Staten Island on St. Pat's day! My great-grandparents,
John Dominic DONEGAN and Mary Ellen HURLEY lived there in the 1880s. I found
a Baptismal certificate for their daughter, Jane "Jennie" Cecile DONEGAN,
sister of my grandmother Ella Elizabeth DONEGAN. It reads:
"Church of St. Mary, Port Richmond, S.I., N.Y., Name: Jane, child of John
DONEGAN and Mary HURLEY, born Oct. 13, 1885 was Baptized Oct. 18, 1885
According to the Rite of the Roman Catholic Church by Rev. Joseph C.
Campbell. Sponsors: P. Hayes and Maggie Hurley. As appears from the
Baptismal Register of this Church, signed Joseph C. Campbell, Pastor; dated
December 16, 1920" (and there is an impressed seal.) I found it behind her
marriage certificate and I think she had the copy to prove she was baptized
in order to get married. (John and Mary moved to SW D. C. - John D.
Donegan's native city, so the marriage cert. is from St. Stephen's).
I recently wrote to St, Mary's of the Assumption Catholic Church, Port
Richmond asking them to please provide info on this family and also to see
whether a young son of theirs was buried in that parish's cemetery. A young
son named Steven or Stephen died and is said to be buried on staten Island
and would like to make sure he has a marker. I sent a small donation with my
leter - this was last August - and they never responded.

>We're getting closer and closer, it's time for another NY/Irish song:
>
> When New York Was Irish
>
> I'll sing you a song of days long ago,
> When people from Galway and the County Mayo
> And all over Ireland, came over to stay,
> And take up a new life in Amerikay.
>
>(Chorus) They were ever so happy, they were ever so sad,
> To grow old in a new world, through good times and bad,
> All the parties and weddings, the cealies and wakes,
> When New York was Irish, full of joys and heartbreaks.
>
> We worked on the subway, we ran the saloons,
> We built all the bridges, we played all the tunes,
> We put out the fires, and controlled City Hall,
> We started with nothing, and wound up with it all.
>
>(Chorus) They were ever so happy........
>
> You could travel to Kingsbridge, to Queens or midtown,
> From Highbridge to Bay Ridge, from uptown to down,
> From the East Side to the seaside's sweet Summer scenes,
> We made New York City our island of dreams.
>
>Chorus) They were ever so happy.....
>
> I look at the photos, now brittle with time,
> Of the people I cherished when the city was mine,
> Oh, how I loved all those radiant smiles,
> How I long for the days when we danced in the aisles.
