Cliff has given me permission to pass on info to my other lists when
appropriate. This is a good one to do so.
Although the 1825, 1835, and 1845 censuses conducted by the state had
only head of household and limited information, I envisioned the day
when I would actually look at them. I expected that they would tell me
which people lived in a certain county and
generally where they were living in the county.
There was only one copy made of each census. After the censuses were
conducted, they were stored in the individual county, although they may
have gone to the state before being returned to the county. Due a lack
of interest in records, many of the
original census registers were discarded according to a very reliable
source. It was a big disappointment to learn that these censuses no
longer exist for many counties of the state.
Below, I have a list of years of censuses for each county that were
available for viewing on microfilm at the NYS Library in 1993. This
will indicate that those census registers still exist. Years may be
missing from the list for various reasons, the most common being that
the registers are no longer in existence. I have no exact knowledge
about why a particular year was not available at the NYS Library. The
list is for the
counties covered by my website.
