My grandfather Patrick MORIARTY (parents:Nellie O'CONNOR and Ignatius
MORIARTY)born in Dingle, County Kerry probably on the mid 1860's. He came to
U.S. through Boston as a young man, went to NYC, met Anna Mary
BARRY(parents: Nellie --- and Edward BARRY) born in Kensington Gardens,
England of parents from Cork. Anna Mary was brought to the U.S. along wuth
her brother Jeremiah by her father after the death of their mother. Her
father brought them to live with a married sister Elizabth King in Brooklyn,
probably Greenpoint.Other sisters and brothers of Patrick or Anna were:
Minnie (MORIARTY) RAFFERTY who moved to Bound Brook, NJ, Mae MCSHEFFRI, also
a BREEN.
My great grandmother CATHERINE MCDONNELL came to NYC from County Mayo (a
village near Balinrobe)at the age of 16. SHe came on a ship with brothers
and sisters. One (a twin) died enroute. She married Anthony MAY, a tailor
in Manhattan. Her third child, Catherine, was born in NYC in November 1869.
They lived on Henry Street in Manhattan. I believe they owned the house.
Other children: Joseph, Peter, Honor, Elenor (Nellie), Lillian,
Laurence,Margaret,Mamie,Harry.
She moved to Flatbush, Brooklyn with her unmarried children.
One of Catherine's sisters married a NORTON. another a CARROLL and lived
in Slingerlands, NY, near Albany. A brother had two sons who became the law
firm MCDONNELL and MCDONNELL in Astoria, Queens, NYC. I know nothing else
about her siblings but would love to connect with their descendants.
