Subject: [NY IRISH] Yonkers NY 1870 federal census
Date: Fri, 04 Oct 2002 12:41:31 -0700
A number of wonderful people have been transcribing the Yonkers 1870
federal census and I have just formatted the first 50 pages to put on
line. These pages were all transcribed by June Howard and include 1,993
individuals. This census gives all the people in the household, age,
occupation, where they were born and if their parents were foreign born.
However, the census was extremely hard to read. The enumerator had an
old fashion handwriting plus he didn't spell the surnames correctly. We
transcribed as he spelled the names. At this point I have A to H on
line and hope to get the rest on line by the end of the day. You can
access the census at the url under my name, at the top of my home site,
click on New York State, then click on Yonkers, then on Census.
If anyone would like to help with this project, please email me off
line. I have the census and can send a page as an attachment to an
email and then the transcriber puts the info into a Word or Works
spreadsheet and sends it to me. To view the census, you can use any
image software such as Paint which comes with Windows Accessories.
