My experience in search obits, I found three types of death notices.
The death notice which mentioned name, nearest kin, funeral info.
Usually and number of notices listed together in alph order. Obituary
which was an actual write up about the person's life, with family
members and funeral info. Then some papers actually had funeral write
ups where the mentioned the pallbearers.

The NY Times is a major newspaper all over the world. I would suspect,
unless your relative is well known, you would probably only find death
notices in the paper. If I were you, I would check a more local paper.
Did you know the Brooklyn Eagle is accessable at the Brooklyn Public
Library on line?
