Dear Pat,
Great suggestion.
My grandmother’s family – parents Patrick and Catherine Brooks (Walsh)
and their 11 children emigrated to the US from County Clare, Ireland.
They landed in New York sometime in 1888 (I think).
I haven’t as yet been able to verify this on ship listing, so the date
is based on the 1900 and 1910 census. They lived for a few months in
New York before moving first to Danbury and then to Bridgeport,
Connecticut.
There were six boys – Joseph, Edward, John, Paul (Patrick), James and
Frank -- and five girls – Mary, Delia, Elizabeth, Jenny (my
grandmother), and Catherine. The children were aged 21 to 4.
According to family legend, Edward, and perhaps several of the other
children worked in New York. I think there must have been other family
members who emigrated here before them, but I have no idea whether they
were Brooks or Walshs. (Additionally, my grandmother had said her
cousin(s) had been named “Prettiest Girl(s) in New York.”)
As you know, doing research in Ireland can be somewhat difficult. But I
have been able to verify some of the family information that was passed
down.
Patrick Brooks’ mother’s name was Bridget Ryan. Catherine Walsh’s
mother’s name was Bridget Lardner.
When I first signed up with the NY website, I had asked if anyone knew
where I might look for newspaper record of any beauty contest winners,
in hopes there might be a “Walsh” or “Brooks” listed.
I want to thank you Pat, as well as the other members, for all the
wonderful tips and stories. Someday, I hope to be able to contribute
more.
Regards,
Jan
