Presents

A Slide Presentation On
"Pelham in Maps: From the 1600s to the Present"
The Seventh in a Series of Twelve Monthly Lectures Presented as Part of
Pelham's 350th Anniversary Commemoration (Free and Open to the Public)

Thursday, July 8, 2004, 7:30 P.M.

Maps are not merely useful and beautiful works of art. They tell us
much about the history of the areas they depict. The area that
comprises today's Pelham has been depicted in countless maps from the
early 1600s to the present many of which are easily available for study.

Mr. Bell will display dozens of maps and discuss their significance as
well as what they tell us about the history of our area. In an
interesting and somewhat unusual twist, Mr. Bell will include a
mini-workshop designed to teach attendees how to conduct their own
research regarding old maps - whether maps of Pelham or some other
place. This presentation is a prelude to the exhibit that will be held
at the Pelham Art Center for two weeks in August: "Changing Landscapes:
Pelham in Maps" as part of the 350th Anniversary celebration.

The presentation also will include a mini workshop on how to find and
research such maps -- whether maps of Pelham or maps of any other part
of the country. This should be helpful to those interested in local
history, genealogical research, military history and more -- regardless
of the geographic location in which you are interested.
