In the 1870 census, Mary Fitzsimons is living in New Hartford, NY and it
says her occupation is a teacher. Can anyone tell me what someone
needed to do in those days to become a teacher ? If higher education
was involved .... where might a nice but poor Irish girl living in
Oneida County go to study for this ? Mark
