I have received permission from Richard to post his message, sent to the
CoTipperary list here..
To coincide with Remembrance Sunday (tomorrow) the National Archives in
the UK have finished putting online the complete Medal Roll for WW1.
This is the nearest thing to a roll call of the men and women in the
“British” Army who served in 1914-18 and amounts to more than 5 million
names. It is not known exactly how many of these were Irish-born but it
is somewhere in the region of 300,000 to 500,000. We know with some
accuracy that over 49,000 Irish-born men were killed in that conflict.
For a country with a population of just 4 million the numbers are
staggering.
The medal roll is particularly valuable because about 60% of individual
records from the war were destroyed in the bombing of London in WW2.
The index is searchable free but they charge £3.50 to download an image
of the entry.
There is the usual problem with recurring Irish names - the index search
offers 98 Patrick Brennans and 504 John Ryans!
The site is at:

ID=10&searchType=browserefine&pagenumber=1&query=*&queryType=1
As always seems to happen with new online sites, it is extremely busy
and best to try when Europe is in bed! – or else wait a week or two.
