My experience with my Irish ancestors tells me
that the given name could be anything, could be
Frances could be Hannah.

My aunt Midge was really Mary, my aunt Sara was
really Sally, my great grandmother appears as
Virginia sometimes Bridget (Bridget should not be
a nick name as it is a saint's name). My aunt
Bobbie is really Barbara and not Roberta. Uncle
Dinny is Dennis.

Another lesson; if a child is named maybe Patrick
and a subsequent son should be born on the feast
day of St. Patrick he might be named Patrick too.
So they would have 2 Patricks. So a nick name
would be appropriate there.

This web site might help you out.

I have the same problem in researching the name
Fanny. My gggrandfather married a "Fanny Letts"
I know when she passed, but I have yet to find the
marriage or the immigration of her. She came to
the US as Fanny Jordan, marrying William Jordan
born ca 1839 in ?Derry? Northern Ireland. His
son's birth certificate says she was also from
Ireland.

I have a puzzle. In the 1850 Mauch Chunk, PA 1850
census my GG-Grandfather
was married to one named, "Fanny" in the 1870
census his wife's name was,
"Hannah". I thought that Fanny had died and he
had remarried. In the 1880
census his wife's name was listed as, "Fanny"
So he had not remarried but the name Hannah was
given in place of Fanny.
Now does any one know if Hannah was ever given for
Fanny?
They both came from Donegal.
