For anyone who wants an eyewitness account of what it was like to travel by
steamship in January 1842 to NYC, you might like to read "American Notes for
General Circulation" By Charles Dickens. At the time, Dickens was a well known
writer, and was quite critical of his tour of NYC, which he expected to be
better organized.
