Hello!

I am a new subscriber to this list. My ggfather
Cornelius Vanderbeek lived in Brooklyn & NYC for most
of his life, but he & his family moved to Patchogue
sometime in the 1920's. Cornelius was b. in NY in
1856. His wife was Rebecca MOUNT, b. in PA, & they
had a son James who died in infancy, 5
daughters-Mary,Melissa, Adelaide, Ethel,& Celeste, my
gmother. I just recently found Cornelius' father
James in the 1850 NY Fed. census. He was a cooper, as
was C. James' wife was Rachel.
Cornelius purchased an old merry-go-round & converted
it into a home in Patchogue. It was known as the
merry-go-round house. It is said he is buried in
Patchogue, but I haven't a clue where. Some family is
also buried in Brooklyn. Does anyone have access to
cemetery inscriptions for Patchogue & can do a lookup
for me? He died in 1921.
The other name I am researching from this area is
DARROW. My gfather was Samuel G. DARROW, who m.
Celeste VANDERBEEK. My mother Gertrude was b. to
them, & then when she was about a yr. old, they moved
to RI. I was b. in RI, so know only what the family
has told me about Patchogue. They must have moved
around 1913. I know nothing of S. DARROW's family, or
even if he was originally from Patchogue.
Cornelius' daughters m. men with the surnames of:
SHAW,MAUSSNER,SELLICK,RYAN,DARROW.
George RYAN was said to have held a political office
in Huntington around the time of 1900-1920.
This is virtually all I know of the family since
their move to Long Island. One family member, a
daughter of the RYANS, lives in Seaford. She is
elderly, & I cannot rely on her for much info,
although she has been very helpful in some areas.
I would appreciate info on any of these family
names.
Thank you,
Marge Hawley
