Subject: [NY-LONGISLAND] Where was Tar-men's/Tarmans Neck or "Wawcoruck" in Brookhaven????
Date: Mon, 23 Feb 2004 09:32:53 EST
On the question about the location of Tar-men's Neck, Fireplace and
Wawcoruck, I've receved a reply from my source at the Long Island Regional Planning
Board (he's a descendent of Robert Coe, on of the founders of the Town of
Huntington and the Town of Jamaica, and his wife is a descendent of the 'Bull' Smith
of Smithtown fame):
1. Back in the 1600's "Nassau" was the name used for all of Long Island so it
is very possible that this place is in Suffolk County.
2. In 1871 residents of Fire Place changed the name to the hamlet of
Brookhaven thus forever confusing it with the Town of Brookhaven in which it is
located.
3. Our 1858 map shows Fire Place to be at the present day intersection of
South Country Rd. and Montauk Hwy.
4. Hagstrom atlases have referred to the the southern part of Brookhaven
hamlet as Fireplace Neck for the last 50 years or so. Since the western boundary
of Brookhaven is the Carmans River it is possible that Tar-men's and Carmans
refer to the same area. I have canoed that area extensively and can well
imagine it as Carmans swamp.
5. As for "Wawcoruck" I don't have a clue.
Thanks, Roy.
I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting.

Walter Greenspan
