Subject: Boundaries of the Town of Riverhead
Date: Sun, 26 Mar 2006 13:21:45 EST
On 3/26/06 (10:51:09 AM MST), in a posting to the Suffolk County Ancestry
Board that was 'gatewayed' to , John Murphy
() asked,
"It appears that some kind of change was made to the boundaries of the Town
of Riverhead not too long after its establishment in 1792. I have some
ancestors who were living on the edge of the Town of Brookhaven near Manorville that
all of a sudden start showing up in some of the Riverhead Town records around
1796. There was a notation in one of the Poor Books that mentioned the lines
being redrawn. I'm trying to find out when this happened and what the extent
of the changes were. Some maps would be nice but probably too much to hope
for."
The area that is now the Town of Riverhead was part of the Town of Southold
until it seceded and became the Town of Riverhead on March 13, 1792.
To research if there were any changes to the border of the Town of Riverhead
after that date, you might want to contact the Riverhead Free Library:

Please post your findings if you do find any changes after March 13, 1792.
For a good town-by-town map showing all the villages and hamlets in each of
LI's 13 towns, I suggest you download a copy of the 2005 edition of the LI
Population Survey by going to:

I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting.
