Dear NYC-Memories, etc.,

What some referred to as those "nickel" places were called automats and were
owned and operated by Horn & Hardart (I think that's the correct spelling).
The last automat was at the corner of 42nd Street and 3rd Avenue in
Manhattan, I believe.

Horn and Hardart owned the land and the buildings where the automats were
located and most of these have been converted into Burger Kings, etc. (Horn
and Hardart also owns a Las Vegas hotel and a catalogue company, or at least
they did several years ago.)

My father would take me to the automat and I really liked their mashed
potatoes (could not get good mashed potatoes at home

For those who would like to see what these places looked like, there is a
movie ... "A Touch of Mink" ... that takes place in the automat. One of the
stars is Audrey Meadows (it might be Jayne Meadows).

Regards,

Walter Greenspan
