We had a great tradition that I have told our kids about many times. My
Dad worked downtown NY in Ohrbach's Dept Store and every Christmas Eve,
Mom and I would go downtown on the subway and meet him at Ohrbach's and
walk 'up' fifth Avenue to see the store windows. At Lord and Taylor's
we would meet my Grandmother who worked there and continue 'up' Fifth
Avenue to St. Patrick's and Rockafeller Center. There we would watch
the skaters and then proceed to Howard Johnson's restaurant for a
Christmas Eve meal. For some reason, we always wound up buying me a
pair of shoes that night too. Don't know how that one got started.
When Howard Johnson's closed, we went to Patricia Murphy's. Sometimes
it snowed and that was a real treat.

Our last trip was the year before I got married, and my husband (now of
almost 35 years) went with us. Now we have our own traditions with our
family but none as memorable as that.
