records for this service. He also used the names Swinger/Sweenier/Swiney.
Any advice as to where to look for these records?
Thank you very much!

Jeanne,
If he served in New York, there is a set of books (3 or 4 volumes) called
"Military Minutes of the Council of Apointment of the State of New York,
1783-1821" compiled and edited by Hugh Hastings, State Historian 1901,
published by the Sate of New York. These books may be at your local library
or you may arrange an inter library loan. John LaBarre (a military digest
lister) informed us that they are available on micro-fische from the New York
State Library (http://www.nysl.nysed.gov) Micro-fische are probably easier
to obtain as a loan.
If your guy is listed, you will probably find his Company/Regiment or the
name of his commander and where he served. With this info you can send for
his records from the National Archives Records Administration. For more info
on researching through the National Archives, see http://www.nara.gov Be
patient with the NARA, it is taking 4-5 months to get the files.
Hope this helps, Bob Blakeslee, Phoenix AZ
