I don't think that having relatives or a sponsor was a requirement for entry
in those days, the border was pretty much open to anyone. Expedited
citizenship was offered to those who served in the Civil War, papers were
filed locally. A lot of Irish immigrants came via Canada, the fare was
apparently cheaper for that route.

New York listers,
I am trying to find records of immigration for my NY soldier who came from
Ireland in the spring of 1861-enlisted in NY and was sent to Carlisle
Barracks PA August 1861. I think he must have worked his passage on a ship
and joined the military shortly thereafter. If this is not the case-I think
he would have been turned back-without family or sponser here in
America.Does anyone know if there are any records to search for Castle
Garden Immigration online?

He came from Co Wicklow, Ireland or Dublin, Ireland.

Possible arrival ship Monarch of the Sea.

Thank you for any help you can provide,
Kay Bradley
