HI,
I am a newbie today to this list. After 17 months of waiting I finally
received a few of my grandfather's military records from NARA. I am
looking for more information since what I got from them is rather
sketchy. He served from May 2, 1898 to Nov. 15, 1898 in the NY 9th
Infantry as musician. I know he played the flute. I would like more
information on this division, such as where it was stationed during this
period of time and what battles it fought. Also, where in NY was this
division formed? My grandfather, in a letter to my father, stated that
he was in the Philippines in Oct of 1900. I know the Span. Am. War
lasted only a few months and was in 1898. He was wounded in the
Philippines and I am trying to verify if his date information is correct
in the letter. Did we have occupation forces there after the war?
Also, at the bottom of the page, it says " See also Co. L, 16 Inf", but
NARA did not send me anything on that division. Does anyone know
anything about that company and division? On his muster out roll, it
says the following under remarks:

"On oral furlough from Sept. 21 to Oct 20, 1898". What does that mean?

I would appreciate any and all help on this matter. Thank you so much.

Judy in Alfred, NY
