Hi all - When looking through papers for old WWII letters, don't overlook
V-mail. They were tiny (as I recall, about 4 or 5" squarish)
and resembled a microfilm printout. They were used during the war to save
space in the mailsacks. It would be a shame if any were thrown out because
they weren't recognized for what they were. And yes, mail service was bad.
A letter from a serviceman was a huge occasion; the letter was often read by
the whole town. Sometimes chunks of the letters - whole paragraphs - were
cut out by the censors. Getting mail back and forth was a very low
priority. As they used to say - "Don't you know there's a war on?"
