I just received the WWI Summary Service card for my great-uncle, but I'm
having a little trouble decifering some of the information. I'm hoping
someone on this list might help in explaining it.
>From 5-29-18 to 6-7-18, it says he served as a machinist mate 2nd class at
"Headquarters 3rd Naval District New York N.Y." Since this was a short
period of time, does this just mean he went on active duty (or was drafted)
at this station?
>From 6-7-18 to 7-18-18, it says he served on "Receiving ship at Philadelphia,
PA" - does this mean he shipped out at Philly?
>From 7-18-18 to 8-15-18, it says he served at "Naval Base 27 Plymouth Eng." -
I'm assuming this means he was stationed in England - is this correct?
>From 8-15-18 to 11-11-18, it say he was stationed on "USS C-258". What does
"C-258" mean? Is that a ship identifier?
I would appreciate any help in interpreting this information. Thank you very
much!
Shannon
