I'm new to the list and new to military genealogy, although experienced in other areas of genealogy. For some strange reason, I have not until now come across an ancestor of the Civil War, and need your advice.
I have a John MCCABE of Ossining, NY, who enlisted on Sept. 1, 1864, in Poughkeepsie, NY, with the 6th New York Heavy Artillery, Company D. I believe he hooks into my Ossining McCabe line, thus am interested in his military records to see if this can be verified. From Ancestry, I got his Civil War Pension index listing, which I know can be used to get his case file. I also have a copy of enlistment record from the index at the State Archives, which did not tell me much family info except born in Ireland (which I knew). Is it likely that the record from the National Archives will get me any additional family info?
I'm taking this approach as the census/vital records searches have not helped. Plus, the military connection
is so interesting, if John McCabe does prove to be "mine."
Thanks for any suggestions....
