Would anyone on this list know what type of military action was going on
in 1883 that might have caused my ancestor, a husband, and father of two
young children, to enlist in the army?

Frank B. STOLL, of Watkins, Schuyler Co, NY, enlisted at Cincinnati,
Ohio, July 30, 1883, and served as a Pvt., in Co I, 6th Reg't, US Infantry.
He was stationed at Fort Douglas, Utah. Where was Ft. Douglas? What was
going on there?

By December, 1883, he was ill. (Skin disease); April, 1844, lumbago; Jun
1886, Epilepsy - all @ Fort Douglas, all "contracted in the line of
duty." What's that about?

December, 1887 to June 1888, "Epilepsy and incipient paralysis in the
line of duty" Army & Navy Hospital, Hot Springs, Arkansas.

"Discharged at Army & Navy Hospital, Hot Springs, Ark., July 29, 1888,
by expiration of service as Private."

He was dead by early December.

In what activities did Co. I, 6th Reg't, US Inf. engage (1883 to 1887)?
Why would the Army retain a man who was ill and, apparently, of no
fighting value to them?

Thanks for your thoughts on this!
Mary in Michigan
