A Regiment of Mounted Sharpshooters
We have been shown an order issued by Gov Seymour, granting permission to
Col. Jno. Fisk, of Suspension Bridge, to raise a regiment of mounted rifles,
and giving him the whole State to recruit from.
The novelty of this branch of service will induce large numbers to enlist
in this regiment, and when it becomes generally known that col. Cook, late
of the 28th, is to be the Lieutenant Colonel of this new organization, and
that hi whole energies are to be enlisted in the enterprise, we cannot doubt
its success. Col. C. has a wide reputation as the manufacturer of superior
target rifles, and is a sharpshooter of no ordinary ability, which, with his
well-earned fame on sanguinary fields, and as a disciplinarian, gives us
assurance of success beyond question. In addition to this, we learn that
Capt. Fenn, late Inspector General, and Capt. Judd, late Adjutant General of
Gen. Knipe's brigade, Capt. Chaffee, Capt.. Skeels, Dr. Paine, and several
other officers of the gallant 28th, are booked for the new equestrian
expedition.
The regiment will be composed of three battalions, or twelve companies,
and when mounted and armed with the long-range, breech-loading rifle, will
present a front anything but inviting to the enemy.
We are requested to state that applications for authority to raise
companies in other parts of the State, may be made to Capt. .H. Fenn, who
will give proper authorizations. Capt. Fenn has established his headquarters
in Rochester, to recruit a battalion. A company will be recruited here, for
this favorite branch of the service, particulars of which will be given
hereafter.
