Death of a Member of Capt. Sherwin's Company.

Fort Federal Hill, Baltimore, Md.,
Oct. 4th, 1862.
Mr. Editor: - At the request of the company, I forward a few facts in
regard to the death of J. Thompson, Co. _[ink blurred: C or G], (Capt.
Sherwin), 129th Regiment N.Y. Volunteers.
This is the first death that has occurred in our regiment. For a number
of days past the young man could retain nothing (not even a swallow of
water) upon his stomach. On Thursday, Oct. 2d, he was removed to the
hospital, where careful attendance was bestowed. the medicine given,
however, seemed to have but little of its desired effect, until six o'clock
on the evening of the next day. At that time the efforts at vomiting were
checked, when reason partially left. After lingering until three on the
morning of the 4th, his spirit took its flight to the other world. The
surgeon informed me that the bile was not taken up by the liver, and
consequently death speedily ensued.
Yours,
J.M.W.
129th Reg't. N.Y. Vols.
