Mary Kohli,
I thought you might be interested in this site. I think I recall that
some of your ancestors might have attended St. Peter's parish. I found
it interesting myself, even though my family has always belonged to St.
Joseph's parish in South Troy.

Lois,

That is a very interesting site. The more I see on our NY-TROY-IRISH
site,
the more I want to plan a visit to Troy-Albany, etc. Not this week, but
hopefully some time this year. I actually did get to Troy, for a few
hours
in 2002. And found the house on Fourth St where my grandparents lived in
1883, and took some photos.
"Working conditions" gives me insights about what daily life was like
for my
grandparents, and their families and friends. That's part of what I am
looking for in doing this stuff we call family history research.
Lois, I think it was you who suggested that the 'wedding photo' of
Patrick
Tully and Ellen Shea may have been taken in someone's home. I
accidentally
deleted that note. I had been away the week the photo appeared, and on
my
return went through the new e-mails too quickly. The idea of it being
someone's private home had never occurred to me. Their circumstances
were
very humble, and my hunch is they would not have known anyone with an
elegant home. I have spent hours studying that picture, and have
theorized
over it a lot. I will reconsider your suggestion.
Most of my theorizing is about that dress. If you have done any amount
of
sewing, you can tell that there is a lot of work to it. She probably
made
this dress herself. It's not something she could have whipped up in one
evening. My guess is that she had made it before she left Ireland and
had it
in her luggage when she arrived. I think that she and Patrick had plans
to
get married when she arrived. As you can see, I theorize a lot in the
absence of documented facts. I still hope to find some connections that
will
help me find a record of the marriage. At least with the info from the
1900
census about her sister Esther Shea Freeman arriving in 1882 also, I'm
feeling a little closer to their story.
