“Johnny Evers ,Troy native, gets a hero’s welcome after he arrives from a
World Series triumph,playing for the Chicago Cubs.His realization that NY
Giants player Fred Merkle
had failed to touch second base at the end of an apparent NY Giants victory
led to the game being declared a tie. Evers is escorted from Albany to Troy
where a two division parade and a testimonial dinner at the Rensselaer Hotel
is waiting for him. Nicholas J. Powers,the president of the Troy Amateur
League is the grand Marshall of the parade.The parade proceeds from St. Joseph's
Club down Fourth Street to Van Buren then turns north on Third to arrive at
Evers home at 443 Third Street’ where the second baseman and members of his
family were given a serenade and rousing cheers from hundreds of throats. Evers
and fellow ballplayer Hugh Hearne are taken by automobile the rest of the
way, north to Broadway and around Franklin Square before arriving at the
Rensselaer. As the line of marchers passed the steamer house members held red
lights and the gongs were sounded until the last one of the paraders had passed.
Stops were made at the Elks Club, several newspaper offices and serenades
given. Every marcher wore badges and carried red fire. At the Rensselaer Hotel
the final course consisted of ice cream served in pretty souvenirs of
baseballs and ballplayers. The hall is decorated with American colors and floral
displays. Evers gives a trophy to the Oakland Club, this years champions of the
Amateur League and Oakland captain ,Frank Guerin accepts. Evers announces his
impending marriage to Helen Fitzgibbons of 733 Burden Avenue with whom he'll
honeymoon in Europe.”
