“Fire Chief Patrick Byron and a Farman volunteer steamer, Joseph A Kugler
are injured fighting a blaze that destroyed the W. A. Thomas livery stable at
88 Third Street in downtown Troy.The fire breaks out at 3:15 am on the 3rd
floor, which is used mostly for storage for hay and feed. An unidentified
pedestrian notices the blaze and alerts nearby restaurant owner John Poland, who
pulls the nearest fire alarm. Police and firemen break thru the front doors and
find William H. Thomas, the owners father, asleep in the office and the
night watchman ,John Coleman, unconscious and partially overcome by smoke
.Firefighters find 56 horses on the 2nd floor,among them Foxie ,an 85 pound pony
that performs at a local theater. A fireman carries Foxie out in his arms.John
Curtain, a volunteer rescuer, suffers slight smoke inhalation. Quick thinking
from Assistant Captain Quinn ,who lowers a large elevator whose rope was
burning,thus when the roof fell,including the elevator attached to roof beams
prevented a worse disaster. Kugler is injured trying to jump from the roof of
the Eldorado Hotel to the next roof,falling 45 feet and has a compound
fracture of one leg. Chief Byron is hit by a ladder that a stream of water hits and
knocks him out, but after revived refuses to leave the scene. He suffers
bruises to the head and neck but reports to work later this morning. W.A.
Thomas, who is out of town, suffers up to 25,000 in damages of which only part will
be covered by insurance.
