Thanks Jeanne. Peggy and I graduated together from VI in Albany in
1968. I'm in DC and won't be able to make the lecture but please say
hello for me. I'm sure the lecture, like her book, will be great.

Ten years ago or so when I was first avidly researching my ancestors in
Albany and Troy, I read Kerby Miller's Emigrants and Exiles, one of the
great books on Irish history and emigration. I was so taken with it
that I sent an overly long email to Professor Miller at the University
of Missouri thanking him for his wonderful work and not expecting to
hear back. He surprised me by responding and taking an interest in what
I was doing. He mentioned Peggy as one of his friends in Albany that I
should contact. I didn't realize at first that it was the Peggy that
I'd gone to VI with but she was a great help to me in my research.
Before settling Albany, my Irish born grandmother was in domestic
service in Philadelphia. The wealthy family that she worked for
summered in Lake George at the turn of the last century, and my
grandmother eventually came to work in Albany for the pastor of the then
new Blessed Sacrament parish. They met while he was the pastor at
Sacred Heart at Lake George between 1890 and 1901. This was the church
attended by the Irish immigrant servants. I'm sure it will be a
wonderful lecture. David

Immigrant families were the backbone of the working class in Albany and
surrounding towns and many of their descendants still live in the
Capital Region. To celebrate their untold contribution to the ethnic
history of the United States, Historic St. Agnes Cemetery will offer a
free lecture and glimpse into the past through the words of local author
and historian Margaret Lynch-Brennan. Dr. Lynch-Brennan, author of The
Irish Bridget, will lead us on the path to understanding the hardships
and endurance of ordinary, working class people with a focus on Irish
women and their role in domestic service from 1840 - 1930. All are
