Lynne has told me that she does not believe there is a connection between
her family and mine:
this is my obrien family:
Edward Whelan and Bridget Hurd married.

John Whelan, their son, born in parish of aglish, county waterford, married
alice obrien on 3/9/1867. Mary's parents were James O'Brien and Mary
O'Brien (not a misprint, that is her maiden name). I do not know any more
about the O'Brien sides.

their children:
Bridget, born 3/9/1868, married james dempsey
Mary, born 7/11/1869 marrried john slattery
Margaret born 2/23/1971, married patrick desmond
Edward born 4/7/1905
Alice, born 7/5/1906
Margaret born 6/14/1908 and married thomas bailey
Agnes born 1/14/1912
Alice Whelan born 8/3/1872 and married john leonard
Catherine born 1/5/1874
Edward James born 11/20/1875
Michael born 9/26/1877
John Joseph born 10/5/1879
Anna Whelan born 1/7/1883

It's not a problem Jeff. My great grandfather was John O'Brien. He died
in the Little Sisters in Albany in 1940. His parents and siblings came
to Albany from Waterford City in 1866. There is another John O'Brien
who Lynne Sisk knows all about. I think I've seen correspondence
between you and her. There is a possibility of a connection between
Lynne's O'Briens and mine. They conveyed land back and forth to one
another around 1870 or so in Watervliet. (now Colonie) Happy to help
further. David

David:
I apologize if I have asked in the past, but do you have Obrien's from
the
Albany/Troy area that could be related to James or John?

Thanks Jeanne. Peggy and I graduated together from VI in Albany in
1968. I'm in DC and won't be able to make the lecture but please say
hello for me. I'm sure the lecture, like her book, will be great.

Ten years ago or so when I was first avidly researching my ancestors in
Albany and Troy, I read Kerby Miller's Emigrants and Exiles, one of the
great books on Irish history and emigration. I was so taken with it
that I sent an overly long email to Professor Miller at the University
of Missouri thanking him for his wonderful work and not expecting to
hear back. He surprised me by responding and taking an interest in what
I was doing. He mentioned Peggy as one of his friends in Albany that I
should contact. I didn't realize at first that it was the Peggy that
I'd gone to VI with but she was a great help to me in my research.
Before settling Albany, my Irish born grandmother was in domestic
service in Philadelphia. The wealthy family that she worked for
summered in Lake George at the turn of the last century, and my
grandmother eventually came to work in Albany for the pastor of the then
new Blessed Sacrament parish. They met while he was the pastor at
Sacred Heart at Lake George between 1890 and 1901. This was the church
attended by the Irish immigrant servants. I'm sure it will be a
wonderful lecture. David

Immigrant families were the backbone of the working class in Albany and
surrounding towns and many of their descendants still live in the
Capital Region. To celebrate their untold contribution to the ethnic
history of the United States, Historic St. Agnes Cemetery will offer a
free lecture and glimpse into the past through the words of local author
and historian Margaret Lynch-Brennan. Dr. Lynch-Brennan, author of The
Irish Bridget, will lead us on the path to understanding the hardships
and endurance of ordinary, working class people with a focus on Irish
women and their role in domestic service from 1840 - 1930. All are
welcome. The details of this lecture are listed below:

Topic: "The Irish Bridget" The Story of Irish Immigrant Women in
Domestic Service

Speaker: Margaret Lynch-Brennan, Ph.D.

Date: February 17, 2011 from 6:30 - 7:30 PM

Latham 12110 http://www.csjalbany.org/index.cfm/HospitalityCenter/

Society are appreciated).
