WORK ON THE FOOTBRIDGE
Central Excavating for the Foundation --Heavier Rails on the Erie.
This morning employes [sic] of the New York Central began excavating for
the concrete foundations for the footbridge which is to be erected over the
tracks north of the entrance to the station on Jackson street, for the
accommodation of passengers. In order to make room for the foundation at
the north end of the bridge the bumping block at the east end of the switch
has been moved thirty feet west of the west sidewalk on Jackson street.
Mayor BURKHART began working for this bridge a year ago last April and he
has kept steadily at it ever since.
Superintendent HENNEFIN of the Erie railroad expects to complete the
work of relaying the rails on the Attica branch of the Erie between Attica
and the New York Central railroad in Batavia tonight. The 63-pound rail is
being replaced with a 74-pound rail. Thirty-four Italians, who live in
boxcars, are engaged in the work and their cars are now standing on the long
switch on the Erie west of Evans street.
