Good Morning everyone...
My name is Wilma Fleming Haynes, I live in Brookings Oregon.. that is on the
coast. Right now it is 4:45 AM and it is still dark..our weather runs about
65 to 70 degrees.
I feel badly for all of you that are in the awful heat..wish I could send
you some of our "cool"..
I would love to find something about my 3rd gr grandfather, where he
practiced..where he is buried....I don't know his given name, his surname
was PECKHAM..it's just a guess on my part, but his name could of been:
[William Augustus Franklin] PECKHAM
b around the middle of the 1700's near Edinburgh, Scotland
d 1828 near Albany
m in Scotland to an unknown grandmother
My great grandfather George Franklin PECKHAM wrote in his memoirs about his
grandparents, but never once did he speak their names!! He says this of
them:
"My grandfather PECKHAM was born near Edinburgh Scotland near the middle of
the 18th century and entered the Medical University of Edinburgh at the age
of 20 after taking a thorough course he graduated with honors and commenced
his practice near his former home where he married. Shortly he made up his
mind to try his luck in the new county of America and on his arrival here
located near Albany New York.
He raised a family of seven children, 5 boys, and 2 girls of which my father
was one. Father was born 10 Dec 1810. Father's brothers were named, Lewis,
George, Alonzo and Alfonzo [twins]; His sisters were Carrilaine and Hester.
Father's name was William A. F. PECKHAM and he was 3rd in line. The
children attended such schools as were had at that time. At about 18 years
of age, father entered the Theological University of Albany; At about this
time grandfather fell from the roof of his barn and received injuries which
caused his death.
Grandmother soon moved to Ohio with her family excepting father who stayed
at his school and graduated in 1834. He took up his labors as preacher of
the gospel. In that capacity he became acquainted with my mother [Lydia
Margaret CHAPIN] they were married and located at Cassadaga, New York. They
resided there until the year of 1838."
I don't know if any of the children were born in Scotland... The only thing
I DO know is that my 2nd gr grandfather Wm. A.F. PECKHAM was born 1810 and
he was born in New York..he was 3rd in line, so I know that at least 5
children were born near Albany, New York..
What I am asking you for is so important to me, yet I don't have much
information do I?
Guess if I could find the following..I would think it was Christmas and I
had all the presents I ever wanted!!
1. Where is the "Theological University near Albany" is it still there?
2. Is there a Dr PECKHAM in any records around Albany say from 1800-1828
3. When any of you are looking in cemeteries around Albany, if you see a
PECKHAM
would you record him for me?
4. Why did 3rd gr gm go to Ohio? She must of known someone there, or she
would of
stayed in her home near Albany, New York
5. Why didn't my 2nd gr grandfather William Augustus Franklin PECKHAM go to
Ohio
where his family was, instead he went to Aztalan, Jefferson, Wisconsin
where he d at
age 39 in 1849.
Thank you all for reading this and may you all be cool and safe today..
Wilma Fleming Haynes
