That is an excellant idea Ruth! I think the majority of the genealogists out
there are willing to pay money to keep the Historical Societies around
(afterall where would we be without them). But they should keep it
resonible enough for people with modest incomes, let's not turn this into a
rich man's (or woman's) hobby. By putting indexes on-line and keeping the
charges minimal they could even send scanned images or transcriptions at no
extra cost to them. This would lower their overhead and increase their
revenue. Plus I am willing to bet they would find a lot of volunteers to
transcribe and scan records which would reduce their work load.
