Tracy,

You certainly can get the death certificate without the day. Just knowing the year is close enough. Since this is a pre-1880 certificate, the state won't have it. If you believe that the person died in Albany, you can apply to the Albany Bureau of Vital Statistics (see my online Guide to Albany Area Genealogical Resources). Their records began in 1870 and they are the only ones to have pre-1914 death records for the city. If the person did not die within the city limits, you will lose your application fee when they don't find it. If the person did not die within the city limits, there is no death certificate available anywhere, because the state didn't start gathering that information until 1880 for deaths (1881 for marriages and births).
