Kathy,
Green Island is in Albany Co. It used to be listed in the Troy city directory, but could not have been a ward in a Troy census (Rensselaer Co.). Green Island is next to (east of) Watervliet. Watervliet used to be called West Troy so I think that is where some of the confusion has come in.
I have never heard of any church records for Green Island being transcribed. Perhaps, they have been microfilmed. Death records began to be collected by local communities beginning in 1880. For the first few years, not much was collected or sent to the state by most communities.
Obituaries would likely be in a newspaper for Cohoes or Troy. You could also check for a Watervliet newspaper. If the person was to be buried in the Albany Rural Cemetery (not far away), or if the person died in an Albany hospitial, the obituary might have appeared in Albany newspaper.
Try this webpage for instructions on how to borrow newspaper microfilms, and to see what newspapers survived from that time period.
