I have broken my home page into three pieces. That should allow those of us with dial-up speedier access. The parts are:
Home page (standards, instructions, table of contents, search engine, main counter)
Records (500+ links)
Genealogical Aids & Local History (700+ links)
The home page and search engine will get the most use, so they are on the smallest of the pages. You can access them for the first time quickly, and you can return to them quickly. The links have been separated into two main parts, the aids being the larger part.
For a long time, I have known that this step was necessary, but the genealogical aids section contains some really valuable webpages that I didn't want to be ignored. I hoped that by keeping them with the records, users would be more likely to take the time to see what was there. Some of those links I use constantly.
The home page will have the main counter. Other parts will have counters that will help me analyze usage, such as the amount of interest in the aids & history section.
I realize that some people might prefer to bookmark (make a favorite of) the separate sections that have been created, thereby bypassing the home page counter. So, to give you the convenience of speed, and still get a count of the traffic (the only thing I ask of my website), I had to think of a way to avoid the bookmarking of those pages. I reject the idea of trapping you in frames. That way you wouldn't be able to tell the address of other websites that you visit, and if you copy a record, you would not know its internet source, nor could you return directly there at a later time. For now, my solution will be to prevent bookmarking the records or aids by frequently changing the address of those. Thinking of that solution is what has allowed me to give you more speed of access. If I can think of another workable solution that won't need frequent tending by me, that may be implemented in the future.
The website has been reindexed, so all webpages that I put online can be searched. Most broken links have been fixed. A few links get redirected to a different address, but they still get you to the same webpage as before. I will change the links to the new addresses when I have time. 3-4 links had to be removed because I think they are no longer available. 2-3 links are temporarily offline but should be fixed in a week or two.
I posted the changes overnight when it would affect the smallest number of people. If there is any problem, I won't be available until about noon to fix it.
