I have a slew of old family letters (most are 150-180 years old) and some are
signed "Emily" and some "Emilie" by the same person, so they really didn't
pay a lot of attention to spelling, even their own names! Another person
sometimes signed his surname "Searles" although he usually signed it "Searls". His
ancestors (buried next to each other in the same cemetery) have five different
spellings on adjacent gravestones: Sarles, Serls, Searls, Searles, Surls.
