Message Board Post:
Bare knuckle prizefighter Jake KILRAIN may have been known as John Joseph KILLIAN or KILLION, when born on 9 Feb 1859. He is listed in several sources & death cert as born in NY, with father John M. Killian b Ire., but mother's name not given, also b. Ire.
When Jake died on 22 Dec 1937 in Quincy MA, his son George C. KILLIAN gave Jake's birthplace as "Greenpoint, NY," but no county.
There is/was one in Brooklyn, but could it be Green Port, Greenport Center, or maybe Green Island? Have not found him as a 1-year old in the 1860 census, in either NY or MA.
Many KILLIANs in MA censuses, and while I'm sure I have the right ones from 1900 on, before that the ages don't fit too well.
We are uncertain about his parents' first names. Tentatively his father could be John M. or Michael, and his mother could be Hannah, Honora or Bridget -- very tentatively.
He was somehow my grandmother's cousin.... Surnames that might help me figure that out are: MAHONEY, MAHONY, REGAN, HERLIHY, HURLEY, SCOTT, CARROLL, or also possibly COHAN, MOORE, CRONIN, or LYNCH.
Any suggestions on where I should search in Albany Co. sources would be most welcome.
Thanks,
Barb Glassel
