The Basket Picnic
The Baptist, M. E. and Congregational Sabbath Schools of this place were
well represented at the Temperance Basket Pic-nic held at Roger's Grove near
Scio yesterday. There was also a large attendance from Angelica, Scio,
Wellsville, Belmont and other places in the vicinity, Friendship having
however by far the largest delegation. The exercises were quite interesting
and were listened to with far more attention than might reasonably be
expected from a large crowd, the majority of whom had come chiefly to enjoy
the fresh air and the contents of their picnic baskets. The addresses by
Rev. C. G. STEVENS, Miss Marian SLUSSER, Major H. VAN CLEVE, Col. WELLMAN
and others were able efforts in the cause of temperance. Altogether it was
a most enjoyable gathering. There were upwards of 2000 persons present.
The return home to Friendship was partially made in a heavy rainstorm, but
the falling moisture did not appear to appreciably to dampen the spirits of
those who had been having a pleasant time during the day.
