I have been researching for years my mother's g-grandfather and hope you might be able to help me.
Our ancestor is Orville Downing born about 1810 (some censuses say NY but most say Vt.). From this birth info his parents, siblings and boyhood is a complete mystery.
He married Phoebe Montgomery daughter of Hugh and Rachael Rose/Ross/Rowe Montgomery in Brownville, Jefferson Co. NY. They lived about 5 years in Lyme, Jefferson Co. NY prior to migrating to town of Gouverneur, St. Lawrence Co. NY. I have info on their children and life here in St. Lawrence Co. but the rest is unknown.
Eldest child named Sprague (suspect connects to Downing line somehow)
Orville called himself a Mohawk Dutchman (leads me to suspect that mother was Dutch and perhaps reared in the Mohawk Valley of NY).
Red hair is common to Downing line.
Other children named Amanda; Thomas, David, Ethelinda, Ida, Adelbert Eugene; Alphos della Martine (supposedly named after a Spanish statue); Phoebe, Mortimer, and Fredrick.
Any help?
