Barbara,
Some of those early regiments took such heavy casualties either from battle
or disease that they essentially ceased to exist and were combined with
other regiments. I'm minus reference books, but the 7th strikes me as one
that took horrible casualties some place. (Besides, the governor of New
York got more political brownie points for making new regiments with new
officers that restocking old ones). You may have already checked it, but
Phisterer's "The Empire State in the War of the Rebellion" usually lists
what happened to a regiment - i.e. disbanded and combined with...... I'm on
my way out of town for the weekend (for a reeenactment actually), but I'll
enquire with my references about the 7th.
