Barbara's inquiry:
"Can anyone figure this out. A William Schutz is suppose to have died in
1864 and he was with 7th Regiment New York. I got the troop records and it
said the 7th Regiment was disbanded in 1863."
Some regiments ended but their troops became part
of a new regiment. For instance, the 20th Regt. in
NYS (Kingston area) existed for only 3 months and
then its soldiers became part of the 80th, which went
on for years. I am tracking two soldiers who appa-
rently were only in the 20th and did not stay with the
troops as they became the 80th. I believe 90 days
was just enough service to qualify for a pension.
I have ordered the pension records for one of those
two soldiers, so I may be more knowledgeable about
this when the file contents arrive from NARA.
