Fiona,

I hope you have access to the FHL near your home where you can order
films for family research. I would certainly try to get a film of the
1909 Brooklyn Directory in order to get the Martin family address. The
1910 Federal Census requires Brooklyn researchers to look for families
via addresses. It's not indexed for New York City including Brooklyn.
The 1910 Census will give you lots of info, How long married, when
emigrated, citizenship status, if home is rented or owned. All these
clues will lead you to other documents, i.e., applications for
citizenship, ship records, marriage records, birth records, land
records, etc.

You could also write to the Municipal Archives 31 Chambers Sr., NY, NY
10007 for Edward's Birth cert.. It's $10 if you know the exact date and
$15 if you want a year searched.

Look at the web site The Brooklyn Page. It has everything you need to
know and more. Good Luck Sheila
