I believe the Scandinavian Home you refer to was the Norweigan Seaman's
Home.

I might not have the name right.

I'll check with my sister and find out more info for you.

The little I remember - it was closed and sold and turned into condo's
a few years ago. I think the records went to a Seaman's home in NYC.

It was part of the Lutheran Church - my sister was married there in
1974.
It wasn't a home, more like a hotel where the Scandanavian seamen could
go when they were in Port. It was very nice in the 1970's and 1980's.
My nephew was christened there in 1982. And by coincidence when my
brother'in-laws family came from Norway for the Christening the local
church's pastor was also on the flight. He was coming over to take over
the "ministerial" duties of the church for a time. So as it turned out
the minister that baptized my nephew was the same one who baptized the
rest of the family in Norway.

The seamen could stay there while in Port and have all the comforts of
home, ie. local newpapers, food, etc.

It may take me a day or so to speak to my sister - but I'm sure she'll
know more.
I'll get back to you.
You could try the phone book info and see if there's one listed in
Manhattan.
Cathy
