Sad Death of a Sportsman
A young man named Person CHADWICK of this city was killed by a shot from
his own gun on Friday while hunting in the woods at Mattatunk, N. J. CHADWICK
had been in company with two other gunners. When the latter were ready to
start for home they searched for CHADWICK and found him lying near a fallen
tree with a terrible wound in his right breast where a charge from his own gun
had entered. He was carried to a farmers house where he died before a
physician could reach him. CHADWICKs gun was clutched in his left hand when
found and near him was his pipe, filled with tobacco which had not been
lighted. It is thought that the gun was accidentally discharged while CHADWICK
was trying to light his pipe. On Saturday the Coroners jury found that
CHADWICKs death was caused by the discharge of a shot-gun, whether
accidentally or purposely not known.
