JOHN DE CANTILLON
John DE CANTILLON, for more than fifty years a resident of South Brooklyn,
and head of one of its best known families, died last night at his home, 524
Fifty-fourth Street in his eighty-first year. He was a man of such
remarkable vigor that not until his fatal illness was a physician called upon
to attend him, and death was solely due to old age. Born in Cork, Ireland,
he came to America fifty-three years ago, and was a next door neighbor of
Commodore VANDERBILT at Stapleton, Staten Island. In 1859 Mr. DE CANTILLON
moved to Brooklyn, and soon afterwards established the firm of DE CANTILLON
and MILLER, the first of its kind in the city to make a specialty of
supplying boats with fuel. Twenty-five years ago Mr. DE CANTILLON, at the
urgent solicitation of his family, retired from active business, and since
then his almost daily custom was to spend ten hours reading, and then take
long walks. He was a man of brilliant attainments, excelling chiefly as a
conversationalist. He was the father of seventeen children, twelve of whom
grew to maturity, and nine of whom formed the first baseball nine of brothers
ever organized in this county. He never tired of talking about his ancestry,
which he traced back to the eleventh century, and was proud of the noted part
his family have always taken in the history of France and Ireland. The death
of two sons and a nephew during the past three months, all of whom were
buried from his home, was a severe blow to him. He is survived by a widow,
three daughters and four sons. The funeral will take place on Saturday
morning at 10 o'clock from the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Fifth
Avenue and Fifty-ninth Street. The interment, which will be in charge of
Joseph L. WART, of 496 Court Street, will be made at Holy Cross Cemetery.
