DRY CHIEF'S WIFE, BUSINESS FAILURE, SHOOTS HERSELF
MRS. MAUDE INGELSBY WAS DESPONDENT BECAUSE OF REVERSES, IS BELIEF.
Mrs. Maude INGELSBY, 40 years old, of 144 Clinton st. Wife of Capt.
John INGELSBY, chief prohibition inspector of the Eastern District, which
includes Brooklyn, committed suicide yesterday by shotting herself TWICE with
her husbands service revolver in her home according to police and Assistant
District Attorney William KLEINMAN, who investigated.
Mrs. INGELSBY left the following note for her husband, which was
found on a table near her body: "Dear John: Forgive me, I could not help it.
Ask Herbert or Phil to return the food and the furniture for Namm's store.
Good Bye, Maude"
The food and furniture in the note referred to a restaurant which
Mrs. INGELSBY had started at the Clinton st address. This restaurant occupied
the first and second floors of the building and Mr. and mrs. INGELSBY lived
on the next 2 floors. it is believed by police that the failure of the
restaurant led the woman to take her life.
The 2 shots were heard by Mr. INGELSBY and a negro maid. Both went to
the top floor of the house and found Mrs. INGELSBY lying on the floor with a
bullet would in her heart over the breast another in her right temple, they
told police.
INGELSBY summoned Dr. GOLDBAUM, of Holy Family Hospital, who found
the woman dead. Shortly afterward Detective Michael FALZEY, of the Butler st.
station; Assistant Medical examiner Dr. Gregory ROBBILEARD, Assistant
District Attorney KLEINMAN and members of the Homicide squard arrived on the
scene.
At first their was a suspicion of homicide because of the 2 shots,
but, after 5 hours of investigation by police and the District Attorney's
office, the case was called a suicide.
"There is no doubt that the wounds are contact wounds." said Dr.
ROBILLARD. 'This woman invested all her money in this business and she was in
debt when the business failed. In my opinion it is suicide."
INGELSBY also said his wife was despondent because of business
reverses.
