QUEENS PRIEST KILLED AS AUTO CRASHES POLE
Father SCHENCK Loses Control of Car on Albany Rd. - Companion Hurt

Albany, May 18 - Driving toward Albany yesterday, the Rev. Richard SCHENCK,
Roman Catholic priest of Jamaica, L. I. was killed instantly and a companion
was injured seriously when their automobile left the road, struck a telephone
pole and overturned in a field nearby.
The mishap occurred on the Albany-New York highway about a miles (as printed)
north of Valatic, several miles from here. Father SCHENCK, who was driving
the automobile, was hurled from it. he suffered a fractured skull. The other
occupant, William CROSS, of New York City, incurred a fractured jaw and
severe lacerations.
It was believed Father SCHENCK lost control of the car.

Father SCHENCK was pastor of St. Monica's church in Jamaica, a position which
he had held from April, 1917. He was born in Berlin, Germany, on Sept. 8,
1866, and attended St. John's College, Brooklyn and the Seminary of St.
Sulpice, Baltimore, Maryland. he was ordained on Dec. 17, 1898. Prior to his
being assigned as pastor of St. Monica's Church he served for a number of
years at St. Columbkille's Chapel.
Father SCHENCK resided at 94-20 160th street, Jamaica. he was very well known
as a composer of music and a writer of plays. One of his plays, "Edward's
Return," showed for some time in the Cort Theatre, Manhattan.
The body at present is at the Robbins Funeral Parlors, 90-35 161st street,
Jamaica. Funeral arrangements are being made by the Rev. Joseph RAPKOWSKI,
assistant at St. Monica's.
