YOUTH BETRAYED BY CAT'S MEOW
Benedict ZENARITIS, 16, OF 77 Chestnut street, was to have a
hearing before Magistrate FOLWELL in Bridge Plaza Court to-day
on a charge of burglary.
Shortly after 4A.M. Patrolman Frank MENDEL, of the Bedford avenue
station, noticed the meowing of a cat. Investigating in the doorway
of the delicatessen store of Samuel COHEN, at 340 Rodney street.
MENDEL says he saw ZENARITIS go behind the counter toward
a cash register. MENDEL went through the hallway, forced a door
in the rear and captured the youth as he was climbing over the transom.
PATROLMAN BURNS FETED
John BURNS, a patrolman attached to the Coney Island station,
yesterday observed his thirty-eighth anniversary on the police
force.He received the congratulations of his fellow bluecoats
and during luncheon period was made the guest of honor at a little
spread. Called upon to make a few remarks by Lieutenant Carl
ANDERSON, BURNS declared that he hoped the next thirty-
eight years would be as pleasant for him as the past thirty-
eight have been.
NASSAU POLICE CHIEF REMOVED
Chief of Police, Joseph LOCKWOOD of Lynbrook who has
held that office for the past two years, was dismissed from the
force to-day, following a metting of the Villiage Board.
The charges against the chief were preferred by Mayor Howard
WILSON, who alleged the chief was absent from duty four days
without permission about three weeks ago.
When the chief was given a hearing on June 5, the Villiage Board
sitting as a police commission, he said he had had a nervous
breakdown. At the time the board reserved decision.
Chief LOCKWOOD says he will appeal from the decision.
ESCAPES FLAMES ON CABIN CRUISER
The 29-foot cabin cruiser Elbroda, owned by, William DWYER,Jr,
caught fire and burned to the water line as Robert WALSH, 18,
of 263 Beach 137th street,Belle Harbor,Queens, ran into the
water at the foot of Beach 108th street, Rockaway, after filling its
tank with gasoline last night.
Police said a short circuit in the ignition system apparently
caused a spark which ignited the gasoline.WALSH leaped
overboard and swam ashore with slight burns.
FIVE BAKERY PICKETS HELD
Five alleged members of the Baker's and Confectioners Interna-
tional Union were arrested late yesterday afternoon charged with
interfering with Benjamin GINTZEL in the conduct of his bakery
at 615 Brighton Beach avenue.
GINTZEL employs union men who are members of the
Amalgamated Food Workers Union, No.3, which secured an
injunction several months ago restraining the other union from
picketing in front of shops that have signed contracts with
the Amalgamated.
Max BRANDIES, business agent for the International who
lives at 414 Neptune avenue, according to GINTZEL,
placed four men in front of the bakery to do picket duty.
When they refused to move on, GINTZEL called Patrolman
Charles CARR, of the Coney Island station, and had the
four pickets arrested.
Magistrate BRILL held them in $300 bail for hearing June 24.
SOCCER PLAYER HELD AS SOCKER
James GALLAGHER, 28, of 4002 Eightieth street, Jackson
Heights, who gives his occupation as a soccer player, was to
be charged with living up to the ''socking'' part of his profession
by Charles HOLWORTH, of 323 Stockholm street, to-day in
Bridge Plaza court.
HOLWORTH was standing at Greenpoint and Manhattan avenues
at 3 A.M. to-day when GALLAGHER appeared, bumped against
him and when he refused to apologize, he charges, punched him
in the nose, causing a fracture.
The commotion attracted Patrolman John DeRESPINO, of the
Greenpoint station, who arrested GALLAGHER.
GARNER-BARKER ENGAGEMENT OFF
The trail engagement of Charlotte BARKER, 16,and Daniel GARNER,19
which was ordered for a six months period by County Judge SMITH
last December is believed to have ended.
According to Raymond BARKER, the girl's father. Young GRANER
has left the BARKER home in Freeport for an unstated destination
and his daughter will continue in a Brooklyn training home for a
further period.For the time being, he said, they will not be married.
EIGHT POLICEMEN WIN PROMOTION
Police Commissioner MULROONEY today announced eight
promotions in the department.
Lieut.Bernard W.RORKE, First District Traffic, was made a captain.
Sergt. William F.CULLEN of Vanderveer Park precinct, was made
lieutenant.
Sergt.Conrad H.ROTHENGAST, of Bronx Headquarters, was made
lieutenant.
The following patrolmen were made sergeants;
Thaddeus A.NEGGESMITH, Fourth Division
Daniel J.O'MARA, Traffic D
Joseph L.PATTON, Correspondence Bureau in Manhattan.
William T.CLANCY, Long Island City
Ferdinand W.WHITE, of Wadsworth avenue station,Manhattan.
