ONE KILLED TWELVE HURT IN AUTO CRASHES
Elderly Man Run Down While Crossing Street - One Driver Arrested

Alexander GALANO, 69, 286 Wyckoff street, was instantly killed when
he was struck by an automobile said to have been owned and driven by
Edward MATTHEWS, of 414 Sterling place, while crossing Third avenue near
St. Marks place. The police of Bergen street station are
investigating. The man was pronounced dead by a surgeon from the Holy
Family Hospital.
Seven persons were injured, two of them seriously, when the
automobile in which they were riding on Lynch street, lst night, was in
collision at Lee avenue with a truck owned and operated by a man who
said he was Walter SERZYSKO, 44 years old, of 1731 Montgomery avenue,
the Bronx.
The automobile which was driven by Izzie HORNFIELD, 36 years old,
of 83 Norfolk street, turned over twice. HORNFIELD received lacerations
of the forehead. He and the other six were treated at Cumberland Street
Hospital.
The other injured are: Mrs. Mae SIMBER, 30 years old, of 217 Hart
street, possible fracture of the skull; Irving SIMBER, 39, her husband,
same address, lacerations of the forehead; Ester HORNFIELD, 30 years
old, wife of the driver, possible fracture of the skull; Bessie SIMBER
KNOP, 55 years old, 83 Norfolk street, shock and bruises, Floria and
Norman HORNFIELD, 83 Norfolk street, lacerations.
SERZYSKO was arrested charged with reckless driving and assault.
He was locked up in Clymer street station and will be arraigned today in
Homicide court and later in Bridge Plaza court.


RECOVER BODY

The body of Bartholomew GORMAN, 46 years of age, of 2317 Twentieth
avenue, Astoria, who was drowned last Thursday in the East river near
the Astoria park, was recovered yesterday afternoon in the East river,
near where he was last seen.
On Thursday GORMAN went to the park and waded in the river to
escape the heat. He got over his head and drowned.
